The Talk, Vermont: Lifting Marginalized Voices

Rev. Dr. Arnold Thomas, former pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran in Jericho, has over the last several years continued and grown an education program that is now called “The Talk, Vermont.” Originally an adult study Zoom program aimed at educating around race in Vermont and the US, it has become a broadcast, call-in program with monthly episodes. You can view the list of 2026 programs (past and upcoming) at the Center for Media and Democracy.

Earlier this month, Rev. Thomas interviewed Jasper Morton, a trans high school student, about their experience in a predominantly straight environment here in Vermont. In the episode, which is just under an hour, Jasper discusses both the support and the obstacles experienced at CVU and in the community at large. They cover topics including school curricula, teenage social settings, and religious interactions.

I commend this episode to your listening ear. For one, it took a great amount of courage on Jasper’s part to tell their story in such a public manner. We can honor their courage by tuning in and listening deeply.

Secondly, the interview gives plenty of examples of what true allyship can look like. Specifically, Jasper speaks warmly of the support and solidarity they experience within their school’s GSA (Gender & Sexuality Alliance). As they described a recent GSA dance event, I couldn’t help but visualize our church’s lower level decorated and transformed into a space for such a gathering. Yet how many young LGBTQIA+ people would think that a church is safe and desirable place for a good hang?

Pride month is almost upon us. During the month of June, you can expect to see a more visible and audible celebration of our Open and Affirming and Reconciling commitments within our worship services. And while being public, intentional, and explicit (PIE!) in our witness is paramount, continued internal learning is also critical. We will be more authentic in our welcome when we spend time listening to understand the lives of those we care about.

And so with gratitude for Jasper’s bravery, let’s listen together this week to their testimony.

PS - This Sunday is Hands-to-Word, Hearts-to-God Sunday. We’ll have a shortened worship service followed by some indoor and outdoor spring cleaning for all ability levels. Due to the shortened service, which will center on prayer, there will be no Sunday sermon. Just one more reason to take some time to listen to Jasper’s words. :)
