More on Mortality, Putting Your House in Order

I’ve appreciated receiving some feedback on our brief worship series, “Mortal body, immortal soul.” In case you were looking for the book titles, here are the works referenced in last week’s sermon:

Gawande, Atul. Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. New York: Metropolitan Books, Henry Holt and Company, 2014.

Chödrön, Pema. How We Live Is How We Die. Boulder: Shambhala Publications, Inc., 2022.

This week, we’ll turn to the “immortal soul” portion, exploring the mystery of what comes after death as well as the legacy we hope to leave behind. Instead of a book list, I simply recommend a (re)watch of Disney’s Coco (2017). :)

In a follow up to this series, I encourage you once more to participate in the “Putting Your House in Order” workshop, which will be on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 12:00 pm. This 90-minute (free!) session is designed to help us think through and clarify what is most important should time draw short. We’ll then make notes that we can use in our own estate-planning or share with loved ones to ease future decision-making. Whether or not you’ve begun estate planning, this workshop is a place to consider, review, or update end-of-life plans for greater peace-of-mind. Kindly register by this Friday.

As always, there is much going on in our life together, and even more to pray for. I invite you to read the many announcements below, and perhaps forward one to a friend. There may be something here that helps to turn a corner, enrich a thought process, or shake from isolation.

With gratitude,

Pastor Jen

Putting Your House in Order - Oct. 26 @ 12:00 pm. On Sun., Oct. 26, we will be joined by Rev. David Abbott of the Methodist Foundation of New England. In addition to preaching, he will offer a 90-minute workshop entitled, “Putting Your House in Order.” This step-by-step program is designed to take the stress out of estate planning by centering what is most important to you. Participants will explore the significance of having a will, sharing one’s abundance, and avoiding the pitfalls of not planning ahead. When you attend the workshop, you will receive a binder where you can record your thoughts, wishes, important people, and generosity plans. Whether you’ve already done estate planning, or haven’t given it a thought, this workshop will help us reflect on the legacy we want to leave behind—granting peace of mind to self and loved ones. In order to ensure we have enough materials, please register in advance for this workshop (see link or QR code). Please register by Oct. 17.
